This is everything in my closet now. It may seem boring to some but I must say it has been incredibly freeing. For one thing the hanging area of my closet not being jam packed makes it so aesthetically pleasing. The even bigger impact this minimalist wardrobe has had over the last two weeks is that I am now longer stressed over what to wear. I can get dressed completely in the dark and come out looking put together without any worries. The fact that it’s taken 95% of the decision making out of the equation for getting dressed has vastly relieved some morning anxiety.

I have been toying with the idea of a capsule wardrobe like this for about five years now. About the same time we started dreaming of living in an RV full time, I started wanting a simpler lifestyle in general. I couldn’t commit to it before. I was scared I would regret getting rid of everything. But I also realized that so much of what I had was already filled with regret. I either couldn’t fit into it, I was holding onto it because of a memory, or I simply felt bad about the money I spent on it. I didn’t feel bad enough to wear the items mind you, but felt just bad enough to cling on to them.

I was overwhelmed by the choices and I was overwhelmed by all the negative emotions that piled on by walking in my closet to get dressed. It shouldn’t be this stressful!

So if it didn’t bring me joy or wasn’t very versatile I tossed it. I took a look at what I wore all the time. One of my most worn shirts was a long sleeve white and grey striped boat neck top. I love my plain grey v neck T-shirt. I adore cardigans. I spent a lot of time (way too much time) on Pinterest researching other people’s capsule wardrobes. I enjoyed even looking at he basic staples in the capsules, so I chose to stick with that.

My husband is a little concerned I may get totally bored and need a shopping binge in the future. It’s possible, then again purchasing one incredibly flamboyant bright orange or pink scarf could spice up my entire wardrobe and go with 98% of it because it’s such a good base. That feels a little powerful to me.

It wasn’t easy by any means to purge. I emptied the contents of my entire closet onto the bed and only hung things back up when I decided they were essential, must have, versatile, staples that I loved. That process alone took a good couple of hours and I have already been pairing back my clothing collection slowly. To be completely honest with you, there were about 25 shirts and dresses I really struggled with donating. I chose to hang them in the back behind everything. The deal was that if I didn’t miss them, after a few weeks I would throw them in the donation box. That’s tonight. I haven’t even thought about them, and writing this up I felt a twinge of guilt remembering them still sitting back there proclaiming to be a capsule wardrobe “enlightened” type. Ha. I’m not really enlightened, but definitely feeling lighter.

  1. This has inspired me to go through my wardrobe. Get rid of things I havent worn since 7th grade…or have never worn. Cut down and simplify, I like it.

    1. It really is freeing. Seeing the space around my clothes gives me a sense of calm. Who would have thought?
