Or if you are averse to hair removal then… heed the trigger warning.

Adventures in diy hair removal via sugaring. Y’all check out my leg!! Or check out Dustin’s for the laugh. 😆

First, what is it? Well it’s the Ancient Egyptian predecessor to waxing, kinda like waxing without the chemicals and you pull with the direction of hair not against it. It’s a mixture of sugar, water, and lemon juice that you boil to carmelization. That’s it. Unlike wax, it doesn’t rip off live skin cells, or potentially heat burn you (if you aren’t dumb) or run any risks of chemically burning you (unless you are deathly allergic to sugar or lemon.)

I have been paying bunches of money to have ze professionals do it, but with a diy recipe like this I figure hey, I make a fantastic caramelized pineapple upside down cake and my caramelized onions are on point. Surely I could whip up a batch.

….that’s the easy part. And it isn’t exactly easy- don’t burn the sugar, don’t get impatient, and DO NOT WALK AWAY. Or it’ll bubble over and sugar your entire stove top.

The jar on the right was my first attempt. I didn’t let it cook long enough so it never firmed up enough to be usable. Let it start to develop a nice rich caramel color. It’ll be runny still. Pour it into a warmed up glass mason jar and LET IT COOL. That will take a couple of hours. I stuck it in the refrigerator. You could also pour it into a baking sheet and use a spoon to play with it a bit so that it cools faster. Whatever you do- DO NOT touch the sugar while hot because it will burn and it will burn bad.

And well, for the hard part— well check out Dustin 😂

Tips:

Don’t bruise yourself, pull the skin tight.

Flick the paste off parallel to your skin, don’t pull straight up.

Don’t do it if you are dehydrated- trust me.

If it’s too thin/soft you will need non stretchy cloth (cotton) strips to be able to pull it. But if it’s relatively thick and can be molded into some what of a ball you can just use your hands.

Use a little powder on the area you are going to sugar. It absorbs the sweat.

Speaking of sweat, once you start freaking out you’ll start getting sweaty palms. Water here is the enemy and it will turn into a globby mess. Good news is that you can wash it off easily. Bad news is you have to get a new sugar ball. Gloves are helpful.

You can also use one sugar ball for the entire sugaring treatment- assuming you don’t sweat it.

If you can handle plucking your eyebrows, you CAN do this. I believe in you.

The best part? No razors needed for WEEKS. AND when it does grow back, it’s so much less. It’s cheap, it’s organic if that’s your thing, and so stinking worth it.
